Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

James was one of three brothers who served in the AIF during the First World War. All three enlisted in 1914, and James was the youngest. His brother 1044 Private Edward Oscar Heawood 15th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres in August 1916, aged 26.

A third brother, 1529 William John Joseph Heawood 51st Battalion AIF, served at Gallipoli with the 12th Battalion and returned to Australia during May 1918.

They were the sons of William and Eliza Heawood of Ouse, Tasmania.

James Heawood was reported wounded and missing, Gallipoli, 19 May 1915. It would be over 12 months before a Court of Inquiry held in the field, confirmed his fate as 'killed in action, Gallipoli, 19 May 1915'.
