Denzil was the son of James Louis Cowen and his wife Gertrude. He attended Humpybong State School. At the time Denzil enlisted Gertrude was running the Orient Boarding house above Suttons Beach at Redcliffe and father, James Louis, was serving as a Shire Councilor on the Redcliffe Shire Council. His brother Errol (2702) also enlisted. Denzel managed Orient House on his return from the war and married Beryl Gladys Ross in 1926
