Trooper James Duffy (Service No:662) enlisted in the AIF on 1 December 1914, and was attached to 8th Light Horse Regiment on 25 February 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on board HMAT A54 Runic. Trooper Duffy was KiA on 7 August 1915 in the attack on the Nek at Gallipoli, and has No Known Grave. James' two sons - Edward and Charles - served in WWII, as did his step-sons Henry and Charles Conroy.
James Alipious Duffy was born in Beechworth, Victoria in 1881 (BDM Vic:20052/1881), youngest of eleven children of John Duffy (b1834 in County Galway, Ireland) and Mary Anne McNally (b1843 in Melbourne, Victoria). John immigrated in 1853, arriving in Melbourne on board the Mobile. He and Mary married in 1860 in Kilmore, Victoria and lived in regional Victoria (Woods Point, Broadford, Lurgon, Gaffneys Creek, Echuca, Beechworth and Tongala) where they raised their family and John was a Labourer and Farmer.
James worked as a Farm Labourer in Murtoa, and in 1910 married Jane Annie Conroy (nee Osler; b1881 in Dooboobetic, Victoria) in Stawwell - Jane was a Widow with three children. James and Jane settled in Stawell, where they raised their family and James was a Farm Labourer in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following James' death at Gallipoli, Jane remarried in 1916.
