Private William Compston (Service No:263) enlisted in the AIF on 4 March 1915 with 9 Depot Coy, and embarked with 28th Infantry Battalion on 9 June 1915 from Fremantle for Alexandria on board HMAT A11 Ascanius. Private Compston served in Egypt and Gallipoli with 10th Light Horse Regiment and 4th Division Artillery, embarking for France in 1916. Private Compston served as Driver attached to 10th Field Artillery and embarked from England for Albany WA on 28 February 1919 on board the Anchises. Driver Compston was attached to 10th Field Ambulance at Discharge on 10 June 1919.
Born in 1899 in Garoke Victoria, William (Bill) Anthony Sutton Compston was the third of seven children of William Compston (b1861 in Coleraine, Victoria) and Ellen Susan Sutton (b1865 in Portland, Victoria). William (a Butcher) and Ellen married in 1884 in Garoke, Victoria and had settled in the Eastern Goldfields of WA by 1896. William worked as Butcher, and he and Ellen lived in Kalgoorlie and Niagara before moving to Fremantle in 1912.
Bill worked as a Butcher in Fremantle where, in 1913 he married Elsie Alma Smetherham (b1890 in Bendigo, Victoria) - Elsie worked in Coolgardie, WA as a Shop Assistant. Bill and Elsie settled in Geraldton, where Bill was a Butcher when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, he and Elsie lived in Fremantle where Bill worked as a Butcher until his death in 1922. Elsie remarried in 1928.
