Enlisted 22 July 1915 as Private John Charles Day (870) in 30th Battalion, at Liverpool NSW. Discharged prior to embarkation, supposedly due to “bad feet”.
Re-enlisted 17 May 1916 as Private John Charles Day at Armidale NSW, and assigned to Depot Battalion. Deserted prior to embarkation.
Re-enlisted 10 November 1916 as Private William Anderson (2761) in 33rd Battalion, at Armidale NSW. Arrived in England 29 January 1917. Served with 33rd Battalion in France and Belgium from 5 July 1917 to 7 February 1918 (and so fought at Passchendaele). On leave in UK March 1918, failed to return, was picked up and convicted of desertion. Sentenced to 1 year detention (commuted). Rejoined his battalion in the field 13 August 1918. To hospital sick with bronchial pneumonia 22 February 1919, died in hospital 12 March 1919.
