Son of Thomas O'Neill and Mary Ann O'Neill nee Toohey of George Street, West Bundaberg, QLD.
Brother of Timothy James O'Neill who was killed in action on 7 Novenber 1917 while serving with the 11th Light Horse Regiment. Buried in the Gaza War Cemetery, Plot X11, Row E, Grave 2; Peter Aloysious O'Nelll who died of wounds on 20 August 1917 while serving with the 15th Battalion. Buried in the Trois-Arbres Cemetery, Plot 1, Row Z, Grave 35.
Commenced return to Australia on 2 January 1919 aboard HT Berrima as wounded disembarking on 17 February 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane
