Biography contributed by John Oakes

The name Henry Jackson Newbury (alternative spelling) is included on both the Sydney Station Honour Board and the 1921 Honour Roll, which also records him as being part of the 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion.

He was born at Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales in September 1888 and spent five years as an apprentice painter to his father in Wales before emigrating to Australia. In 1914 he is listed in the Government Gazette, as Newbury, working at Eveleigh as a painters’ assistant.

He enlisted at Liverpool on 16th January 1916. On his Attestation Papers he declares himself to be not married, but this is later corrected to name a woman whose address is given as Dorset.

He left Sydney on 3rd June 1916, on HMAT ‘Kyarra’, reaching Plymouth two months later. In September he was in France with the 1st Training Battalion and in November was taken on the strength of the 3rd Battalion.

He received gunshot wounds to his neck, thigh and left leg in action on 16th April 1917, was transferred to hospital but died there on 21st April.  He is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
