1903 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Walter Hugh (Hugh) Anderson, 4th Battalion, of Neutral Bay, NSW. A farmer prior to enlisting in January 1915, Hugh Anderson embarked from Sydney with the 5th Reinforcements on board HMAT Kyarra (A55) on 13 April 1915. He arrived at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was wounded in action in August. He rejoined his unit later in the month and remained until the evacuation in December. Anderson arrived in France in March 1916 and was appointed Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) in May. He was wounded in action in France in July and convalesced in England until October. Returning to his unit he reverted to the rank of Private, but was appointed Lance Corporal again in April 1917. He was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 5 May 1917. L/Cpl Anderson was 27 years of age.
