Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Bernard was posted to France in April 1917, wounded in the second Battle of Bullecourt at the start of May 1917 and died of his wounds in hospital at Rouen a few weeks later.

His older brother, Lt. Frederick William Lane 47th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Dernancourt on 28 March 1918, aged 29.

Another brother, Denis Arthur Lane, a career volunteer soldier, rose to a high rank, enlisting as a Captain in the 12th Battalion and finishing the war as Lieutenant Colonel in the AIF.

Two other brothers, 405 Private Norman Barsham Lane who also served at Gallipoli with the 12th Battalion, and 727 Lance Corporal Alfred Barsham Lane 41st Battalion AIF, both returned to Australia late in the war.

They were all the sons of Benjamin James and Marion Lane, of Lindisfarne, Tasmania.
