Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
David Maxwell enlisted when 17 years and two months old. He was in Egypt for a few months and transferred to the 12th Battalion AIF. He was wounded at Pozieres in July 1916 and was in hospital for some weeks with jaw wound for some weeks. After recovering, he rejoined the 12th Battalion during September 1916.
His parents were anxious to know the circumstances of his death but the Adjutant of the 12th Battalion stated that due to the intensity of the very heavy fighting at Bullecourt nothing was known of his last moments.
His brother, 580 Corporal Haswell Charles Maxwell 9th Light Horse Regiment was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in Palestine during 1918.
They were the sons of John and Emily Maxwell of Kindred, Tasmania, a small town 20 kilometres south west of Devonport.
