Tpr Sidney Lee

From Gallipoli 1915

Writing on 11th July 1915, Dvr. Sidney Lee, 1st Australian Light Horse, told how he had 'deserted' the regiment's transport section after it had been ordered back to Alexandria in order to remain with his friends on the peninsula.

“All the boys of the 1st L.H. Regiment are in the best of health, and wish to be remembered to you all. Am not supposed to be here in the trenches, as I should have gone back with our transport. When our regiment left Heliopolis for the Dardanelles our transport left also, but on arrival it was found that the transport was useless, so after about three or four weeks on the ship we were told we had to return to Alexandria, much to our disgust. I decided on making a 'break' the first chance I got and join the regiment. The chance came, and taking it, here I am with the boys. One of my mates returned from Alexandria this morning, and it seems to be the general opinion amongst them that I suffered with 'cold feet,' and cleared off altogether. If you hear at any time in Scone that I deserted, you can contradict it.” [1]

He was killed in action on 7th August 1915. Commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Sidney Lee was the 23 year-old son of Matilda Sophia Lee, of Mill Street, Scone, New South Wales.
