Biography contributed by John Oakes

Keith Wentworth MILES (Service Number 2206) was born in 1893 in Marrickville, Sydney. He worked for the NSW Government Railways. On 11th May 1915, he enlisted in the AIF. He was 21 when he enlisted. He embarked at Sydney on 16th June 1915, on HMAT A63 ‘Karoola’.

On 4th August 1915, he joined the 4th Battalion on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Unfortunately, after a very short time in the field, he was reported missing from 6th August. He was found, in a Court of Enquiry held at Flairbax France on 22nd April 1916, to have been killed in action during 6th-9th August 1915.

Accounts state that he took part in the attack at Lone Pine on 6th August, and it is likely he died in this battle. He is commemorated at Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.

Following his death, his father was sent a scarf and a money belt, which were items that he had in his possession in the field. He was also sent his son’s war medals. He received the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
