Patrick was the eldest of eight children of James Mahoney (born 1860 in Ireland) and Mary Mulcahy (born 1864 in Ireland). James married Mary in 1890 in Gympie, QLD and lived in Gympie, Toowoomba, Brisbane, and on the Darling Downs in QLD where James was a Farmer and a Labourer.

Patrick was a Labourer at Burpengary in QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. He served as a Gunner and Driver (Service No:20842) with 9th Field Artillery Brigade and 12th Field Artillery Brigade in France. He was hospitalised on several occasions with Influenza and Diptheria, and was Discharged in November 1919. Brothers John Thomas (Service No:3404) and Daniel (Service No:15709) also served in WWI and brother James Vincent (Service No:QX28684) served in WWII.

Patrick returned to Burpengary in QLD, where he was working as a Labourer in 1928 when he married Mary Margaret Sherlock (born 1905 at Pine Mountain in QLD) in Ipswich QLD. The family lived in Beaudesert, QLD where Patrick was a Labourer before relocating to Brisbane where Patrick joined QLD Rail. He worked as a Ganger before becoming Foreman in 1954. Patrick died in 1974 and Mary in 1987.
