Biography contributed by Daryl Jones

2093 Driver Charles Maurice Mackie, Australian Field Artillery (AFA) from Prospect, South Australia. A 19 year old presser and machinist with prior service with the 34th Battery AFA Militia, he enlisted on 19 August 1914. He embarked for overseas with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade Ammunition Column from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Medic (A7). While serving at Gallipoli, he was taken ill and evacuated to Mudros on 8 December 1915. On recovery, he rejoined his unit in Egypt in January and proceeded to France with them in March 1916. Six months after transferring to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, he was taken ill and hospitalised. Dvr Mackie died of a cerebral tumour on 13 January 1917 and was buried in the Boise Guillaume Communal Cemetery, France. According to his mother, "he was one of the first five boys to hand in his name to his Captain of the Battery for voluntary services on the morning that war was declared". - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)

"THE LATE DRIVER C. M. MACKlE.

News has been received of the death on January 3, in France, of Driver C. M. Mackie. He was the youngest son of Mr. G. D. Mackie, and was one of the first to enlist. He was attached to the 34th Battery Field Artillery, Citizens' Force, before joining the A.I.F. He was with the artillery at the landing at Gallipoli, and left the trenches on September 13, suffering from rheumatic fever. On leaving hospital he returned to his unit in Egypt, and later proceeded to France. He was in the Pozieres battle, through which he came without injury. In October last he was granted ten days' leave in England. On his return to France he wrote that he never felt better or more fit in his life, and the news of his death was a great shock, as no imformation had been received that he was ill. He was employed for some years by the Singer Machine Company, and at the time of enlisting was a mechanic with Messrs. Kurtz & Harper. He left Adelaide on October 20, 1914, with the first contingent. Driver Mackie was 21 years of age last June, and his only brother, Corporal G. N. Mackie, is with the A.I.F. in France." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 10 Feb 1917 (nla.gov.au)

Son of George William and Elizabeth MACKIE, of Orangeville, via Camden, New South Wales.
