Son of Thomas Henry Orford and Helen Amelia Orford nee Logan of Eltham, Victoria.

Brother of Frederick John Orford who returned to Australia on 24 October 1917 having served with the 24th Battalion.

During 1914c William married Hilda Bell Wilson in Victoria.
