Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Alfred Paine served as a Sergeant with the 3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles in the Boer War. When he enlisted during March 1915, he was over six feet in height but over 40 years old.

He was the son of Edward and Helen Paine, of Auburn, New South Wales. His younger brother, 2639 Cpl. Walter Douglas Paine 1st Battalion AIF was killed in action during the capture of Pozieres on 22 July 1916, aged 28.

Alfred served on Gallipoli for a time with the 20th Battalion before he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and transferred to the 18th Battalion.

Paine attended a Bomb School in France during May 1916 and was promoted to Lieutenant during June 1916. He distinguished himself at Pozieres where he was recommended for a French Croix de Guerre. The recommendation states, “at Pozieres on 4th August 1916, Lieutenant Paine showed great courage and wonderful endurance. He remained in the line for eleven days and finally led an attack on the enemy trenches although badly shaken in the early part of this period.” He did not receive any award.

He was promoted to Captain on 21 May 1917. He was recommended for a Mention in Despatches during January 1919, which was awarded and he was returned to Australia during March 1919.
