Private Hilton Field (Service No:2065) enlisted in the AIF on 6 February 1915, and was attached to 7th Infantry Battalion on 17 April 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on board HMAT A20 Hororata. Private Field was WiA (shrapnel wound to thigh) at Lone Pine, Gallipoli on 9 August 1915, and on 24 February 1916 transferred to 59th Battalion. Private Field was attached to 15th Machine Gun Battalion (Ferry Post) on 7 June 1916 when he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles. WiA in France on two occasions in 1916 (GSW, Shell Wound and Shell Shock). Private Field was hospitalised in England before embarking for Melbourne on 27 July 1916 on board HT Demosthenes. Private Field was attached to 5th Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 26 October 1917 (Medically Unfit). In WWII, Private Field (Service No:V379249) served in the ACMF with 6 Battalion VDC from 2 February 1942 to 18 October 1945.
Hilton was born in Yorkshire, England in 1891, youngest of eleven children of Marshall Field (b1847 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England) and Alice Haigh (b1849 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England). Marshall was an Iron Moulder in 1868 when he and Alice married in Marsden, where they settled and raised their family and Marshall worked as an Iron and Brass Moulder.
Hilton was working at Woolton Mill in Marsden as a Loom Under Tuner in 1911 when he immigrated with his older brother Oswald, arriving in Melbourne on board the Themistocles. Both brothers settled in Geelong, where Hilton worked as a Loom Tuner. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1917, Hilton returned to Geelong where, in 1920 he married Fanny Rosetta Buchanan (b1893 in Geelong, Victoria). Hilton and Fanny settled in Geelong, where they raised their family and Hilton worked as a Loom Tuner. Hilton died in 1967 and Fanny in 1968.
