Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Brodie Hugh Hamilton was born on 23 September 1895 in Ballina NSW to David G BRODIE, and Jessie Annie. Brodies father David G Brodie was a civil engineer(1). Hugh grew up and lived in Warren Road, Marrickville, Sydney, NSW. Hugh had 3 siblings his younger sister Effie Isabella Brodie, Jessie Keith Brodie and David Arthur Brodie. Effie was born in 1897, and Hugh’s other sister Jessie was born in 1901. Unfortunately, Jessie died the following year on the 28th of February, 1902. David Arthur Brodie was born a year after Jessie’s death (2). Hugh studied at Sydney Technical High School and was part of Technical High School 1911 Division III first-year (3). He was given an intermediate technical scholarship in 1913 (4). After his education, Hugh was put on probation for 12 months from the 1st of December 1914 as a junior clerk in the Department of Agriculture.(5)

Hugh enlisted on the November 19, 1915. He left Australia with the 15th reinforcement divisional company on RMS Orsova which left NSW on the 11th of March 1916. He served in the 1st Divisional Signal Company, responsible for providing communications to military units. This would include establishing and maintaining communication lines using telegraph, telephone, or other means to ensure effective coordination and command during battles (6). He spent the first few months of his service in the Middle East - Tel el Kabir and Egypt. He was then transferred to England to the Signal section at Sheffield for training.

He proceeded overseas to France 6th August 1916. He spent time at Etaples Australian Base Depot completing more training. During late 1917 and early 1918 he served in France and Belgium. He was granted short leave to Paris in February 1918 and then rejoined his unit serving until the end of the war.

Unfortunately, Hugh’s mother Jessie Brodie died while he was still at war in 1917 (7).

He attended the Australian Central Corps School, Rue, while awaiting repatriation. Fortunately, Hugh Brodie did not get injured and survived the war.

Hugh arrived back in Australia on the 23rd of July, 1919. (9) After the war, Hugh continued to work as a junior clerk in the Department of Agriculture. He married Nellie Hollander Carruthers 1927. (10) He worked as a clerk in the Chief Secretary's Department on 16th July 1928. (11)

In 1929 Hugh was moved to the Child Welfare Department, Department of Public Instruction which took effect from the 9th of  May, 1929 (12) until 1936 when he was moved to the Government Belief Branch, Chief Secretary's Department, to be Officer-in-Charge, Homes for Unemployed Trust, Department of Social Services. (13)

In 1930 He moved with his wife to Ashbury, New South Wales, Australia.

Hugh would go on to serve in World War 2 in 1940 as a Lieutenant (15)  Hugh survived World War 2 and continued working until 1956 when he retired as the senior administrative officer of the Department of Technical Education. (16) Hugh died from unknown causes in 1972 at the age of 77. (17)
