James Dundee Bostock was born in Rockhampton, Queensland on 3 July 1896. He was an 18 year old farmer from the Experimental State Farm in Dulacca, Queensland when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 2 November 1914.
Bostock was allotted to the 9th Infantry Battalion, 1st Reinforcements, which embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles, on 22 December 1914. Bostock was subsequently transferred to A Company of the 9th Infantry Battalion.
On 25 April 1915 Bostock was a signaller in the first wave of Australians at the Gallipoli landing. He is credited as the second man to go ashore at the landing.
Bostock was wounded in action on 28 July 1915 and was evacuated to Malta and then England before being invalided to Australia on 17 March 1916. He was discharged medically unfit on 31 May 1916.
Still yearning to serve his country, Bostock re-enlisted seven months later for Home Service before taking up a call for recruits late in the war. On 19 April 1918 Bostock further re-enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force 6th (Queensland) Reinforcements. He deployed to Europe on HMAT A41 Bakara but arrived in England three days after the Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918.
After the Great War, Bostock returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 and was discharged on 17 July of that year.
Prior to deploying to Europe on 22 September 1918, on 22 August 1918 James Dundee Bostock married Cassie Mary Gertrude Chardon at Holy Cross church at Wooloowin in Brisbane. The couple had three children - Robert (1920), Gloria (1923) and Keith (1929).
James Bostock was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
When the Second World War commenced Bostock re-enlisted once again and served from 1941 to 1945 reaching the rank of Captain.
