He embarked from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Gallipoli 5 March 1915 and within two months of serving on the peninsula he was killed. On 2 May 1915 1,344 men died at Gallipoli.

Edwin’s cousin A.E. Joyner, Director Bon Marche Ltd, Draper and Clothier 368-372 Hay Street Perth was the Executor of Edwin’s Estate.
