Herbert was the son of Rudolph and Hanna Lienert nee [Neilsen]. Herbert left
Adelaide with the 43rd Battalion on SS Gaika on 6 August 1918, disembarking
at London on 13 October. He was sent to France with his unit on 22 January
1919. Herbert was admitted to the 40th Casualty Clearing Station with
influenza on 10 February. He was transferred to hospital at Lewisham, England
where he spent three weeks receiving treatment. Herbert was treated for
measles at the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital in England prior to returning to Australia.
on the Devon on 8 October and was discharged on 9 December
