Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College

Before the war:

Before the war, James Fowell was a Chauffeur. He was born in Ashbourne, England. According to his service record he had previously served with the Notts Derby Regiment (also known as the Sherwood Foresters) in the Boer War. When he enlisted for World War I he was living in Adelaide. Shortly after the war he gave his address as Mitcham. He was married, with a wife named Margaret Irena Alexandrina Fowell. He was 5ft 4 in, 166lbs, he had grey coloured eyes and brown hair. He also had two tattoos one on each forearm.

During the war:

Fowell enlisted in the 10th Battalion. His service number during the war was 2149. He joined the AIF on the 5th of March 1915. He was a private during the war. He embarked from Adelaide Australia on the 23rd of June 1915 and he was 31 years old at the time. He arrived on Gallipoli on 4th August and was attached there to the 11th Battalion. He served on the peninsula for just five days, but during that time fought in the battle at Lone Pine. On 9th August he was shipped to Malta with what was later diagnosed as asthma. In early 1916 he returned to Australia and was discharged from service on 14th September 1916.

After the war:

Few details of Powell's postwar life are known. He went on to live the rest of his life with his wife. He later died on the 13th of June 1941 by age. He was buried in Adelaide at West Terrace Cemetery.
