Ward was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his courage at Lone Pine on the 8 August 1915. His name and J.T. McKendrick of the 12th Battalion were put forward by the Adjutant of the 7th Battalion, "for excellent work in a captured trench when the garrison (7th Battalion) were nearly bombed out by the attacking Turks 9th August. By their energy and accurate bomb throwing they succeeded in completely preventing enemy from taking control of fire away from garrison. (one being reported as killed)"
Ward was awarded a Mention in Despatches and in fact both men were killed in action, officially on the 11 August 1915.
