Ward was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his courage at Lone Pine on the 8 August 1915. His name and J.T. McKendrick of the 12th Battalion were put forward by the Adjutant of the 7th Battalion, "for excellent work in a captured trench when the garrison (7th Battalion) were nearly bombed out by the attacking Turks 9th August. By their energy and accurate bomb throwing they succeeded in completely preventing enemy from taking control of fire away from garrison. (one being reported as killed)"

Ward was awarded a Mention in Despatches and in fact both men were killed in action, officially on the 11 August 1915.

"Mr. J. H. Ward of 34 Kelly Street, Battery Point, has received from the Base Records Office the following extract from the "London Gazette" of January 28, 1916, relating to the conspicuous services rendered by his son, the late Private H. J. Ward, 12th Battalion, who was killed at Gallipoli on August 11, after four months fighting:- "I have the honour to submit herewith the name of No. 174, Private H. J. Ward, 12th Battalion, whose services I wish to bring to your Lordship's notice in connection with the operations described in my despatch of December 11, 1915. The late Private Ward left Hobart with the first Tasmanian contingent. He took part in the historic landing on April 25, and was mortally wounded four months subsequently. Deceased was a well-known player with the North Hobart Football Club."
