Son of John and Mary Carr of 148 Eveleigh Street, Redfern, NSW; brother of Richard Carr of 'Westward Ho' Wentworth Road, Burwood, NSW

29 April 1918 - whilst on patrol near Villers Bretonneux his group came under fire from a German machine gun. John was last seen heading in a particular direction and never seen again. At one time it was assumed that he may run into another German post and been taken Prisoner of War. Years later the Germans stated that there was no record of John being held as a Prisoner of War.

Member of The Hawkesbury Heritage Lodge 150 and Yanco 313

He was a student studying farmiy in the Hawkesbury region between 1909-1912 and then in 1913 moved to Leeton NSW.  Bro Carr enslited in July 1916. As Lodge Yanco 313 wasn't offically consecreated until late 1917, Bro Carr would have been a foundation member

LEETON, Wednesday.(13 Sept. 1916) — Private J. W. Carr, one of many settlers on tho Irrigation area who have volunteered, was entertained last night at a social by residents and presented with a wristlet watch.

Mr. J. W. Carr, of Farm 737, Leeton, who has volunteered for active service, entered. Hawkesbury Agricultural College in July, 1909, and after spending years' training gained the Diploma of Agriculture, with honors. He then took over the management of a Jersey stud farm ou the Dorrigo, but relinquished that position to come to Yanco. He was employed in the construction branch of the Commission for two years, and then took up his present farm in Whitton Avenue. During his stay in Leeton Mr. Carr identified himself with the  Church of England, and was choir master for two years and Warden for one year. He is the secretary for the local Masonic body: Carr is not a growler ; he wouldn't 'swap' his block for an other, and he is arranging to have it carried on by the Soldiers' Association.
