Alfred Henry was the second of five children (and only son) of Alfred Jacob Bennett (born 1872 in Hackney, London) and Minnie Glazebrook (born 1878 in Bartley gree, Worcestershire). Alfred and Minniw married in 1896 in Sydney, NSW and the family was living in Kogarah in NSW when Alfred Henry enlisted in the AIF in January 1916.
Alfred's brother - in - law, Cyril Walter Purdom enlisted in 1915 in the AIF and served with 19 Battalion as a Private (Service No: 951).
Alfred was 16 years of age when he enlisted in the AIF, and gave a false DoB and address, stating he was an 18 year old Farmer born in Christchurch, New Zealand.
According to his mother, Alfred's 'desire to enlist arose through his overhearing a statement from his Grandmother that she would like her family represented at the front. He never rested until he enlisted after that'. Alfred's parents contacted the AIF and advised of his correct details and stated they were happy for him to enlist if the Army wanted him.
On 31 October 1917 Alfred was absent without leave, having failed to return from leave by the due date. He was court martialled and sentenced to 10 years penal servitude. According to letters between the AIF and the family lawyer in 1918, this sentence was cancelled and Alfred had rejoined his unit.
Alfred was Discharged in January 1920, and in 1926 married Vera Rose Buzza in Perth, Western Australia. Alfred and Vera settled in Gladesville, NSW where Alfred worked as a Carpenter. By 1937 they were living in Parramatta, NSW where Alfred worked as a Labourer until his death in 1948
