Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

69 years ago today, on the 6th March 1956, Private Henry Edward Brien, 18th Battalion (Reg No-381), labourer from 40 & 41 & 50 Bishopgate Street, Wickham, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 73. ANGLICAN 1-28. 36.

Not married.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 1st April 1883 as BRYANT to Henry, died 1893?, and Sarah Ann Brien, died 18.7.1937, Hamilton, N.S.W., age?, mother of 6, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-26. 37, no funeral notice located, name not listed on Sandgate Cemetery database, Henry enlisted on the 14th January 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Transferred to 18th Battalion 24.11.1916.

Admitted to hospital 31.12.1916 (exhaustion), 27.1.1917 (defective vision).

Wounded in action - 3.5.1917 (GSW left forearm, severe).

Embarked for England 4.5.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 31.10.1917.

Henry arrived home invalided on the 29th December 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 30th January 1918.

Re-enlisted 17.6.1918, Newcastle, N.S.W. No other information located.

Mr. Brien’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Henry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
