11 Dec 1918: Honoured Military Medal, AIF WW1 Private Oskar Olsen. Australian War Memorial 28, 1/303. 13.07.July 1918 – 31.07.1918. 5th Australian Division, 8th Infantry Brigade, 29 Battalion AIF. Private Oskar Olsen No. 5089 In the sector opposite Morlancourt on night of 18-19 July 1918, the enemy after a heavy bombardment of the whole sector made a determined attempt to rush and retake a portion of the trench system captured by us a short time previously. Attacking simultaneously on both flanks of the trench system and at the same time bombing down the sap. The enemy wounded all of the garrison but Private Olsen and another man. (No. 5100 Private Harry Reed) These two gallant men gallantly fought the bosche off and sustained the unequal contest until assistance arrived. Private Olsen displayed conspicuous bravery and devotion of duty and the splendid work of this man and his comrade prevented the enemy from gaining a footing in our trench or obtaining identification. Report Received: Brigade 20 July 1918. Passed 24 July 1918.Lt. Colonel J W Arthurs. Privates Olsen and Reed were awarded the Military Medal (MM) for their actions on the night of 18/19 July 2018.
