Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 20th July 1917, Bombardier Anthony Stephenson, referred to as Tony, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-5236), carpenter or master builder (Messrs. A. E. Meyers and Stephenson), father of one (Lila (Lyla) Belle, born 1911, Newcastle, N.S.W., Clarence N. W. born 12.1.1907, Wickham, N.S.W., died 3.8.1912, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 5, no death or funeral notice located), from Chinchen Street, Islington, New South Wales and Bryant Street, New Lambton, N.S.W., was Killed in Action by enemy artillery shell fragments, Messines, age 30.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Wallsend, New South Wales possibly May 1887 to John Nicholas (died tragically 13.10.1908, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 45), from 12 Church Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., and Sarah Jane Stephenson nee Ford (died 18.3.1928, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 65, mother of 4 or 5), from 12 Church Street, Newcastle, N.S.W.; husband of Frances (Fanny) Stephenson nee Keenan (married 1906, Hamilton, N.S.W., remarried to James Thompson 1921, Newcastle, N.S.W., Frances died 1960?), from Narara Road, Adamstown, New South Wales (1915) and Greaves Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W. (1920) and "Palais Royale", Katoomba Street, Katoomba, N.S.W. (1923) and Steel Street, Jesmond, N.S.W. (1924) and "The Gift", Willis Street, South Kensington, N.S.W. (1929), Tony enlisted on the 5th June 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 27th September 1915.

Granted leave from the 10.5.1917 to 26.5.1917.

Mr. Stephenson is resting at Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot III Row E Grave 23.

Place of Association – Wickham, New South Wales, Australia.

Tony’s name has been inscribed on the Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor, New Lambton War Memorial Gates, New Lambton Public School Roll of Honour, New Lambton Mechanics' Institute (certificate), Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Newcastle Central Methodist Mission Roll of Honour, Newcastle Master Builders' Association Roll of Honour, Baulkham Hills - World War 1 Memorial - William Thompson Masonic Schools and the Sydney United Grand Lodge Honour Roll. Name not inscribed on the 3rd Australian Garrison Artillery Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Stephenson gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so I will erect a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of Tony’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country.
