Private Garnet Edward Eales (Service No:V5272) initially served in the AIF (Private; Service No:VX46641) from 11 July 1940 to 12 August 1940, when he Discharged to enlist in the ACMF on 13 August 1940. Private Eales served with 17 Garrison Battalion, 5 Works and Parks and 4 Army Troops Coy RAE - graded as Plumber. He was attached to 17 Garrison Battalion at Discharge on 1 January 1944 - Medically Unfit. Garnet had served in WWI (Lance Corporal; Service No:1720), his brother Kenneth served in WWI and WWII, and son Ronald served in WWII.
Garnet was born in Penshurst via Hamilton, Victoria in 1895, third of four children of Samuel Eales (b1860 in Penshurst, Victoria) and his second wife Jane Stevenson (b1867 in Cavendish, Victoria). Samuel (a Widower with a young son) was a Butcher in 1888 when he and Jane married in Penshurst. Samuel and Jane lived in Penshurst and Hamilton, where they raised their family and Samuel was Butcher and Labourer, and from 1879 was a member of the Oddfellows (MUIOOF) Penhurst.
Garnet worked in Gazette via Hamilton as a Station Hand and Farm Hand, returning following his service in WWI and working as a Labourer. By 1925, he and Ivy Lena Edmondson (b1903 in Hamilton) Victoria) had moved to Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Garnet was a Labourer and Railway Employee. Garnet was a Well Borer in Hamilton in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and worked in Hamilton as a Linesman until his death in 1961. In the post WWII years, Ivy worked in Melbourne as a Peace Officer and Clerk, and died in 1970.

Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He did excellent work in giving direction to the flank of the attack, and kept in touch with the unit on his right. He went forward with two men and captured an enemy regimental commander and his staff. He then worked all over the captured area, and collected valuable documents and information. He did splendid work throughout the engagement.'

Lance Corporal Garnet Edward Eales (Service No:1720) enisted in the AIF as a Private on 7 January 1915 and was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Anzac on 17 April 1915 on board HMAT A20 Hororata. WiA (GSW leg) at Anzac on 6 July 1915, Private Eales embarked from Alexandria for Marseille on 26 March 1916 on board HMT Megantic. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 8 December 1916, he was at Polygon Wood on 27 September 1917 when he was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal for 'conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty' (AWM) - this award was gazetted in 1918. Lance Corporal Eales embarked from Southampton for Melbourne on 6 July 1919 on board HT Boorara and was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 25 October 1919. Garnet served in WWII, as did his son Ronald. Brother Kenneth served in WWI and WWII.
