Add my storyBiography contributed by Mary Morris
William Joseph Armstrong was my grandfather, and when he returned from the Western Front in 1919, he took up a soldier settlement block at Hampden Section 469, Hundred of Julia Creek. I still live in the house he had built with War Service assistance and I still farm the soldier settlement property with my husband. We still retain a lot of letters written by William Joseph Armstrong to his family throughout the war.
"...6086 Gunner William Joseph Armstrong, 3rd Field Artillery Brigade from Robertstown, South Australia. A 23 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 9 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 9 November 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62). After arriving in Egypt, he was appointed a Driver and then proceeded to France in March 1916. While serving on the Western Front, in June 1918 he reverted to Gunner at his own request and transferred to the 1st Division Medium Trench Mortar Battery. Gnr Armstrong arrived back in Australia on 31 May 1919..." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
