THE PEACE OF GOD WHICH PASSETH ALL UNDERSTANDING MOTHER'S BOY
1832 Driver Lewis Parkinson Hetherington, 8th Light Horse Regiment (15th Reinforcement Group). Born at Cassady’s Bridge in 1893, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Driver (Parkinson) Hetherington, he was educated at Warrnambool State School. Farmer, single, n.o.k. father - T Hetherington, Cassady’s Bridge. Enlisted 9th August 1915, aged 22, embarked on HMAT A44 Vestalia on 8th January 1916.
After initial training at Broadmeadows, Lewis was sent to Egypt for more training. He was reassigned to 4th Division Ammunition Column and spent two years delivering supplies and ammunition to the front line. In November 1917, he was badly wounded at Passchendale and died at Abbeville while being evacuated back to England. Sadly all his personal belongings were lost when the ship bringing them back to Australia was sunk.
Lewis died on 12th November 1917 of wounds suffered at Ypres on 20th October. Buried Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France, Grave III.D.24. His parents chose the words for his epitaph: “The Peace Of God Which Passeth All Understanding Mother’s Boy”. His name is commemorated on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, the Warrnambool Soldiers’ Memorial, and the Christ Church Roll of Honour, Warrnambool.
The Warrnambool Standard of Wednesday 21st November 1917 reported his death: “DIED ON SERVICE. HETHERINGTON.
