Alick Hanna was born on April 18, 1885, in Gumeracha, South Australia. In his early life, he went to two different primary schools, including Forreston Primary School and North Gumeracha Primary School.. Alick Hanna grew up with his parents, Mr. Dawson Hanna and Miss. Annie Bethune and 7 siblings, Dawson Hanna, William Leslie Hanna, Richard Norman Hanna, Marie Jessie Hanna, Percy Victor Hanna, Gordon Hanna and Lizzie Irene Hanna.

Before he enlisted, he did end up having a job as a farmer, most likely in Gumeracha. He enlisted on the 15th of September 1914 and embarked Melbourne, Victoria on 8th May 1916. The ship he embarked on was the HMAT Kabinga A58.

Alick served in the Middle East with the Imperial Camel Corps.

He returned home to Australia arriving 12th August 1919 and was discharged 7th October 1919.

Alick Hanna died 27th June 1952 and is buried at the North Gumeracha Cemetery. He is commemorated with a plaque in the South Australian Garden of Remembrance.
