Son of John Ward Simmons and Amy Simmons of 4 Wilson Street, South Yarra, Victoria. Brother of Jack Robinson Simmons who was killed in action on 3 May 1917 and  has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial

Served his Civil Engineering apprenticeship with Wm. Humble & Sons of Geelong, Victoria

Commenced return to Australia on 21 March 1919 aboard HT Kildonian Castle disembarking on the 7 May 1919
