On 11 October 1919 Herbert married Alice Harden in the Registry Office, Chorlton, England. Registrar C.H. Hamsbottom officiated

Commenced return to Australia on 20 December 1919 aboard HT Runic disembarking on 6 February 1920 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney accompanied by his wife and child.
