Add my storyBiography
Thomas William Downie was a 30-year-old clerk when he enlisted on 18 January 1915. Thomas was the only child of Duncan Fraser Downie, the Superintendent of Stewart's Creek Prison in Townsville Qld. Thomas' twin brother James Robert died (aged 20 months) on 19 Jan 1886, and his mother Ellen Downie (nee Davey) died nine days later.
Thomas arrived at Stewart's Creek with his father (the newly appointed superintendent) in 1894 aged 10, and lived there with his father and two aunts at the prison until the time of enlistment.
