On the 19th May 1915, Sergeant Donald Fegan, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-1501), gentleman from 99 Fleming Street, Wickham (Islington), New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Gallipoli Campaign, age 30. No place or cause of death details given.
No Roll of Honour circular submitted.
Born at St Helens, Lancashire, England about 1884 (arrived in Australia about 1912, service in India and South African Boer War) to the Honorable John Lionel Fegan M.L.C. (died 29.12.1932, age 70) and Edith Louise (Louisa) Fegan (died 29.5.1946, age 73) of Elsmere House, 99 Fleming Street, Wickham (Islington), New South Wales, Don enlisted on the 23rd November 1914 at Liverpool, N.S.W. as Don.
In a letter received from Don in the Gallipoli trenches he talks about fighting on hills steeper than Dargai, India and Dornkop - (literally "thorn hill") is a ridge and locality on the western outskirts of Soweto in the Gauteng Province, South Africa.
Don is resting at 4th Battalion Parade Ground Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. Row E Grave 3.
Mr. Fegan’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board and the Wickham (Dangar Street) Methodist Church Roll of Honour Tablet, whereabouts unknown. Place of Association – Wickham, New South Wales, Australia.
There is no memorial inscription on the family gravesite plaque to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Don’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 2-127. 50.
