Arthur left Outer harbour on board the Atria on 14 August 1916 and proceeded to France from Folkestone in England on 20 March 1917. He fought with the 5th Pioneers Battalion throughout the duration of his war service in France. Arthur returned to Australia on the Beltana on 2 June 1919, reaching Australia on 15 July and was discharged on 29 August.
