Edward was initially rejected as a recruit by the 1st A.I.F. due to having eczema. Upon being accepted he left Melbourne on board HMAT A 60 Aeneas on 30 October 1917 reaching Devonport, England on 31 December. He went to France with the 10th Battalion on 1 April 1918. Edward was shot in the left foot at Hetia on 30 July and was invalided to England where he was admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital at Chichester, after being treated at hospital in Boulogne. He was returned to Australia on D 28 Borda on 20 October 1918, reaching Adelaide on 15 December and was discharged on 11 July 1919.
