23 May 1918: | Honoured Military Cross, Broodseinde Ridge, For gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations near WESTHOEK east of YPRES on 3/6th Oct., 1917. Pte. NICHOLSON, the only surviving runner in the Company, carried out his extremely arduous duties in an excellent manner. Communication with Battalion Headquarters was extremely difficult and on many occasions he had to pass through persistent artillery barrages heavy machine gun fire and sniping, both as guide and runner. He performed his duties in a particularly willing and cheeful manner, setting an excellent example to his comrades. | |
