William Edward grew up in Houghton, South Australia. He was the son of Mrs E. J. Drury, who lived in Inglewood, South Australia. Before enlisting in the army, William Edward worked as a Railway Porter. On his Attestation Form, it described him as having blue eyes, brown hair and his religion was nominated as Methodist. He was 20 years and 8 months old, healthy and strong when he enlisted 11th January 1916. He embarked 31st May 1916 and served in France. He began the journey back to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged in September 1919.
