Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

95 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 7th July 1926, Lieutenant Charles Henry Godebye, 4th Australian Divisional Ammunition Column (Reg No-1351), grocer from C/O Jack and Mary Ann Collins, Howard, Queensland and 27 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 156 Union Street, The Junction, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 30. ANGLICAN 2-120. 27.

Born at Maryborough, Queensland on the 31st March 1896 to George Samuel and Marianne or Mary Ann Godebye nee O'Brien; husband of Annie Cecily Godebye nee Gallagher (married 1921, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1964, 38 years a widow), Charles enlisted December 1914 with the 9th Battalion at Maryborough, Queensland.

Mr. Godebye’s name has been inscribed on the Isis North State School Roll of Honour.

There is no indication inscribed on Charles’s headstone of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Charles’s gravesite to honour his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Older brother Alfred Eugene (11th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, Reg No-439, born 1892, died 1967) also served 1st A.I.F.

Lest We Forget.
