Died on this date – 4th December…… Charles Vivian Spriggs was born at Wollongong, New South Wales in 1895. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 24th January, 1916 as a 20 year old, single, Coal Miner from Keiraville, Wollongong, NSW.
Gunner Charles Vivian Spriggs embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Orsova (A67) on 29th July, 1916 with the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column, 4th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 14th September, 1916. Gunner Spriggs had been E.D.P (Extra duty Pay) Corporal from 29th July, 1916.
(E.D.P.) Corporal Spriggs was marched out to Bulford – A.A.T.D. (Australian Artillery Training Depot) on 21st October, 1916. He reverted to the rank of Gunner from 15th December, 1916.
On 18th December, 1916 Gunner Spriggs proceeded overseas to France via Folkestone from A.A.T.D. (Australian Artillery Training Depot). He was marched in to A.G.B.D. (Australian General Base Depot) at Etaples, France on 19th December, 1916 & was taken on strength of 4 D.A.C. (Divisional Ammunition Column) in the Field on 31st December, 1916.
He was transferred 10th F.A.B. (Field Artillery Brigade) on 5th January, 1917 & was taken on strength of 10th F.A.B. on the same day. He was posted to 39th Battery.
Gunner Charles Vivian Spriggs was wounded in action on 1st November, 1917. (Note: previously recorded as “Reported Missing in Action” then crossed out to show “wounded in action”). Gunner Spriggs was admitted to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on 31st October, 1917 (date as per Casualty Form Active Service) having been aerial bomb wounded. He was transferred to Ambulance Train 22 on 5th November, 1917 & admitted to 1st Canadian General Hospital at Etaples, France on 6th November, 1917 with Shrapnel wound/s to head. Gunner Spriggs was invalided to England from 1st Canadian General Hospital at Etaples on 12th November, 1917.
On 14th November, 1917 Gunner Spriggs was admitted to The King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, England with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Head / Skull – severe. The Hospital Admissions for also reported “(trephined) Deaf”. His condition was later reported as “Gradually getting weaker. Vomiting. Coma. Death.”
Gunner Charles Vivian Spriggs died at 9.15 pm on 4th December, 1917 at The King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, England from wounds received in action – G.S.W. Head.
He was buried at 1.30 pm on 8th December, 1917 in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
