The oldest of three brothers to serve in the AIF during the Great War.
Leslie John Hellier Hamond was born at Rockdale in New South Wales and enlisted shortly after war broke out in late 1914 at Claremont, Western Australia where he was a farmer.
The twenty two year old private embarked with the 10th Light Horse at Fremantle for the front on 8 February 1915.
He was to rise through the ranks to Lieutenant in a dedicated military career that saw him involved in all the major engagements against the Turks, from Gallipoli to Beersheba to Es Salt, with the 10th Light Horse Brigade.
It was in the raid at Es Salt on 1 May 1918 where his war came to a halt. Lieutenant Hammond received a severe gun shot wound that shattered his left elbow ultimately resulting in his repatriation to Australia in September 1918.
His other two brothers also saw action at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Tragically younger brother Corporal Allan Portsmouth Hammond was killed in action at Pozieres in August 1916, whilst his other brother Walter survived a leg wound on Gallipoli and the horrors of France to return to Australia after the Armistice.
