Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

69 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 6th October 1951, (3 burials on this day), Corporal James Alfred Duffy (M.M.), 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-412), boilermaker's assistant (Morison & Bearby Limited), from Clyde Street, Islington, New South Wales and 23 Cowper Street, Georgetown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 55. ANGLICAN 1-21. 138.

Born at Murrurundi, New South Wales on the 24th August 1896 to Francis John and Charlotte Mary Duffy; husband of Annie Duffy nee Shelley (married 1920, died?), James enlisted with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 20.7.1918 (gastroenteritis), and awarded the Military Medal on the 1st September 1918, James did not return home until November 1919, being discharged on the 5th January 1920.

Mr Duffy’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and the Islington St. Mark's Anglican Church Roll of Honour (photo courtesy of Ed Tonks, OAM, unveiled on the 17th September 1916). Name not inscribed on the Morison & Bearby Limited Roll of Honour or the Newcastle Federated Society of Boilermakers Roll of Honour.

There is no indication on James’s headstone plaque to tell us of his gallant service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label, kindly supplied by Andrea Gerrard and John Thomas, in remembrance of his courage and duty for King & Empire during The Great War.

Older brother Frederick William (2nd Battalion, Reg No-838 (Original Anzac), born 1890, died 1970, Wyong, N.S.W. - also served 1st A.I.F.
Lest We Forget.
