53 years ago today, on the 30th September 1967, Private Thomas Alexander Calder Malcolm, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2388A), Special Constable (Walsh Island Government Dockyard, Newcastle, N.S.W.), of 18 Hubbard Street, Islington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. PRESBYTERIAN-16NW. 5.
Born at Michelago, New South Wales on the 24th May 1886 to Peter Calder and Mary Ann Malcolm; husband of Jessie M Malcolm nee Lyle (married 1906, died 1969), Thomas enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 17.7.1916 (German measles) and wounded in action - 12.5.1917 (GSW right buttock and thigh - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article134860931 - listed as severely wounded), Thomas returned home November 1917, being discharged on the 16th February 1918.
Mr Malcolm’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and the Tighes Hill Pride of Ferndale Lodge, No. 1845, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 4th April 1916, 24 names inscribed, whereabouts unknown).
I located Thomas resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so February 2020 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
Is Thomas related to Roderick William Caldor Malcolm - 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, Reg No-2153?
