James DORAN, (Service Number 4573) was born at Carrington in Newcastle, NSW, on 8 December 1890. For his schooling he went to Marist Brothers, Newcastle. On 23 September 1913 he joined the NSWGR&T as a moulder in the Northern Division of the Railways Permanent Way Branch. On 14 August 1915 he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.

James DORAN (Service Number 4573) was born at Carrington in Newcastle, NSW, on 8th December 1890. For his schooling he went to Marist Brothers, Newcastle. On 23rd September 1913 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a moulder in the Northern Division of the Railways Permanent Way Branch. On 14th August 1915 he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.

James joined the AIF on 16th August 1915 with the rank of Private (Service No. 4573). He was initially posted to the 14th Reinforcements and the 1st Infantry Battalion. In his Attestation Papers he gave his occupation as Iron Moulder and stated that he had been apprenticed to Rodgers Bros. of Newcastle for five years. He nominated his father, James Doran of Wickham in Newcastle, as his next of kin.

He embarked aboard RMS ‘Osterley’ for Egypt at Sydney on 15th January 1916. After arriving in Egypt, he was transfe.rred to the 45th Infantry Battalion on 6th March 1916. On 2nd June 1916 he embarked at Alexandria for France. On 6th August 1916, he was killed in action near Pozières.

His grave is in Pozières British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Pozières, Picardie, France. At the Australian War Memorial his place of association is given as Carrington, Newcastle, NSW.

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 6th August 1916, Private James Doran Jnr, referred to as Jimmy, 45th Battalion (Reg No-4573), iron moulder (Honeysuckle Point Railway Workshops, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from 83 Albert Street, Wickham, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at the Battle of Pozieres, age 25. Cause of death not stated.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 8th December 1890 to James Snr (died 24.9.1931, Wickham, N.S.W., age 69) and Mary Frances Doran nee Farrelly (died 17.4.1937, Wickham, N.S.W., age 74), Jimmy enlisted on the 16th August 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Jimmy is resting at Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, France. Plot III Row P Grave 4.

Mr. Doran’s name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll, Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article134861724, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, Carrington Memorial Gates and the NSW Government Railways and Tramways, First World War Roll of Honour. Name not inscribed on the Honeysuckle Point Railway Workshops Roll of Honour.

There is no memorial inscription on the headstone for the Doran family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Jimmy’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-05. 25.
