2 May 1915: Wounded AIF WW1, Private, 1403, 16th Infantry Battalion (WW1), ANZAC / Gallipoli, GSW to chest sustained at Bloody Angle. Evacuated to Egypt via HS Gascon, however died of his wounds enroute the next day 3 May 1915 and was buried at sea.

Son of James and Emily Cowell of Mortlake, Victoria. Brother of Claude Maxwell Cowell who returned to Australia on 15 September 1918 having served with the 21st Battalion and Charles Thomas Cowell of 23rd Battalion who died of Chronic Nephritis on 23 October 1917 in Cambridge, England and is buried in the Cambridge Cemetery, Row C, Grave 3641
