He was 25 and the son of Alexander and Isabella Thomson, of Brownhill, Kininmouth, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The village of his birth, Fetterangus (Scottish Gaelic: Fothair Aonghais, Scots: Fishie) which was in Banffshire until 1891, is a small village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, located just to the north of Mintlaw.

He is commemorated on the Peterhead War Memorial; one of six Australian Great War casualties remembered there.
