Corporal Ernest Edwin Flint (Service No:1571) enlisted in the AIF on 24 August 1915 as a Private posted to 3 Depot Squadron. Private Flint was attached to 10th Light Horse Regiment on 22 November 915 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Suez on board HMAT RMS Mongolia. Promoted to Corporal on 20 March 1917, he served in Egypt and Palestine, embarking from Port Said for Fremantle on 29 April 1919 on board HT Dorset. Corporal Flint was attached to 3rd Light Horse Brigade HQ at Discharge on 28 July 1919.
Born in Bendigo, Victoria in 1883, Edwin was third of seven children of William Burrows Flint (b1842 in Warwickshire, England) and Amelia Edwards (b1854 in Adelaide, South Australia). William (an Engine Smith in England) and Amelia married in 1872 in Bendigo, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Miner. By 1909 William and Amelia and their family had moved to the Western Australian Goldfields, and lived in Gwalia and Kalgoorlie where William was a Prospector and Manager. In 1914 they moved to Perth, where William was a Salesman.
Ernest worked as a Miner and Labourer in Gwalia and Kalgoorlie, and in Perth in 1911 married Margaret Mary Oliphant Jack (b1881 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland) - Mary had immigrated in 1909, arriving in Fremantle on board the Mongolia. Edwin and Mary settled in Perth, where they raised their family, and Edwin was a Carrier in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Edwin returned to Perth, where he worked as a Carrier and Storeman until 1923, when he moved to Adelaide, leaving Margaret and their children in Perth. Edwin died in Adelaide in 1950, and Margaret died in Perth in 1967.
