Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

103 years ago today, on the 30th August 1918, Private (runner) William (Billy) Walter Moore Jnr, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-824), driver & carter (Hawkins Ltd, Newcastle, N.S.W.) from 97 Maitland Road, Islington, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Mont St Quentin, age 30 years 5 days.

Born at Gordon Square, Marrickville, New South Wales on the 25th August 1888 to William Snr (died?) and Margaret (died 1921) Moore of Fifth Street, Boolaroo, N.S.W., Billy enlisted January 1916 with the 36th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Mr. Moore’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Roll of Honour (photos, unveiled on the 14th December 1916, 14 names mentioned, photos of 100 soldiers, now inscribed with 148 names), Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour, Newcastle Lodge No. 423 Ancient Order of Druids Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name would be inscribed on the Marrickville (Chapel Street) Superior Public School Roll of Honour if this exists.

The inscription on the headstone of Billy’s mother Margaret sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery tells us of the supreme sacrifice of her son (note, wrong date inscribed), and I have been unable to place poppies in remembrance due to lockdown.

Lest We Forget.
